Research Study for Scholars is underway!

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes
A word cloud of the research study in the shape of a book with a skull and crossbones on the cover

So after working for a number of years on my doctorate and working towards my dissertation, I'm happy to announce that my research study has been approved by UMASS Boston's IRB and my dissertation committee.

So now comes the fun part!  Finding folks interested in participating in the study!  You can learn more about the study here.

Yet, there is a real challenge with my study in that I'm trying to reach scholars who are making use of certain networks (namely, SciHub, LibGen, ICanHazPDF, and r/Scholar).  Because engaging on these networks is often not discussed openly, it's really hard to find out who is using them and ask them to participate in this valuable study which explores their experience as scholars on such platforms.

So if folks meet these criteria and are interested in contributing to a better understanding of research literature acquisition, please consider filling out this consent form and intake survey:

  1. I (Lance Eaton) do not know have a friendship or professional relationship with (if that's a bummer, there's still a chance to help; see below!).
  2. Self-identify as a scholar or researcher
  3. May or may not be affiliated with a higher education institute
  4. Located in the United States or affiliated with an institution in the United States
  5. Have used Sci-Hub, Library Genesis (LibGen), Reddit/Scholar, Twitter (#ICanHazPDF) or some other online space to access research literature that you used (or plan to use) to complete your own research.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete this consent form and intake survey. Everyone who completes the survey will be contacted, though not everyone will be selected for the study.

How else to help?

But what if you know me and therefore can't participate in the study?  Or you don't know those platforms but might know someone who does?

I have included some copy that you are welcome to adapt/adjust to your own voice or just copy/paste in total.  If those are too much, would you at least consider sharing these posts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) that I’ve already created?

Are you a #scholar who uses #SciHub, #LibGen, #ICanHazPDF,  #rScholar on #Reddit?  Please consider participating in (@leaton01) important research study?

Fellow scholars! Do you use #SciHub, #LibGen, #ICanHazPDF on Twitter or r/Scholar on Reddit?  Would you be willing to help my friend (Lance Eaton) in his study?  His dissertation focuses on how scholars understand their experiences on these platforms and their scholarly identities.
