Coming into it I was extremely nervous because I had no previous background with reading or studying comics. As the weeks are going on I find that to be an advantage to me because I enjoy learning about this medium so much. I have recently read Blankets by Craig Thompson, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, Maus by Art Spiegalmen, and a variety of other short comics and texts about comics. I have learned the different artistic styles of different artists and writers and am beginning to be able to tell the difference between creators. I enjoy analyzing the panels to find deeper meanings that connect to how the author wanted you to read them or just hidden messages they portray. An interesting thing I have learned from Bechdels Fun Home is that in the graphic novel, her and her father were living vicariously through one another. She was trying to make her feminine father more masculine, and he was trying to make Alison more feminine. These few panels of the graphic novel basically sum up the complex relationship that Alison has with her father, who dies of a motor vehicle accident. All of the hidden meanings and technical terms involved with making comics enthrall me and really interest me. In all honesty, in the beginning of the year I was dreading walking into this class, and now I absolutely love it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
